Studio Melt was founded in 2012 by jeweller Ange Hailey, beginning as a working studio in the heart of Newcastle. Originally created as a place for her own practice, it was a space to make, explore and share jewellery directly with the local community.

Through the Renew Newcastle program, Studio Melt was given temporary access to a vacant shopfront in the Hunter Street Mall. What began as a simple studio soon evolved — with a small retail space at the front and jewellery classes held in the evenings. As the studio grew, so too did the collection, with Ange gradually inviting the work of other studio-based jewellers and object makers whose values aligned with her own.

From these beginnings, Studio Melt developed into a contemporary jewellery gallery dedicated to work that is made by hand, in small studios, by independent makers. Today, the gallery represents over 75 artists, primarily from Australia, alongside a considered selection of international makers.

Every piece at Studio Melt is studio-made — not mass-produced — and often exists as a one-off or in very limited quantities. The collection spans sculptural, textural and refined pieces, including a strong focus on alternative engagement and wedding jewellery, united by a commitment to craftsmanship, material integrity and thoughtful design.

Studio Melt continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its origins as a maker-led space — one that values process, individuality and the enduring appeal of objects made slowly and with intention.

Today, Studio Melt shares its retail space with local slow fashion label High Tea with Mrs Woo. Designed and made in Newcastle, they carefully craft clothing and accessories for modern thoughtful living. Natural fibre fabrics, ethically made, responsible design.
