The Studio Melt story

Studio Melt began in 2012 as jeweller Ange Hailey’s working studio in the heart of Newcastle. Originally created as a place for her own practice, it was somewhere to make, experiment and share jewellery directly with the local community.

Through the Renew Newcastle program, Studio Melt was given temporary access to a vacant shopfront in the Hunter Street Mall. A small retail space soon appeared at the front, with jewellery classes held in the studio after hours. As Studio Melt grew, so did the collection, with Ange gradually inviting other studio-based jewellers and makers whose work and values resonated with her own.

From those beginnings, Studio Melt has grown into a contemporary jewellery gallery dedicated to work made by independent artists in small studios. Today, we represent more than 75 makers, primarily from Australia, alongside a carefully considered selection of international artists.

Most pieces are made one at a time or in very limited quantities. The collection moves between sculptural, textural and quietly refined work, with a strong focus on alternative engagement and wedding jewellery. What connects it all is thoughtful design, quality materials, exceptional craftsmanship and a strong individual identity.

Studio Melt continues to evolve, but remains grounded in its beginnings. At heart, it is still a maker-led space that values process, individuality and jewellery made with care and intention.
