Captured Necklace by Kate Sale

Sale price$450

Only Once - Contemporary Jewellery Exhibition 2026

Sterling silver, copper, brass, powder coating.
47 x 18 x 5cm.

Captured was made using a variety of techniques. The large ‘net’ was made using woven copper wire that was then soldered together, formed and soldered again. The piece was then hand powder coated. The ‘branch’ was sand cast in sterling silver. The chain and large circle were hand fabricated from sterling silver wire. The Black rectangle is brass Chenier that was cut and soldered together with sterling silver rings. This was then powder coated in matte black.
I wanted to make a piece that was a statement necklace combining traditional and ancient silver smithing techniques with the more modern powder coating. This piece was inspired by the contrast between the two methods and how they can work in harmony. The netting is symbolic of the feeling of being caught and trapped in one technique but through branching out and taking a risk, beauty can be created.

Kate Sale is a contemporary jeweller based in Perth, WA. Driven by her love of colour and organic shapes, Kate uses Sterling Silver and powder-coated metals to bring brightness and difference to her pieces.
Kate enjoys pushing the boundaries of 'traditional' jewellery making practices by exploring their limits to create unique and one off pieces. All of Kate's casting methods, both Sand Casting and Lost Wax casting are done in her home Studio, allowing her the freedom to direct the creative path of the pieces that a casting house would not permit such as stone in place casting. This gives Kate the time and resources to create truly unique pieces. Adding colour to jewellery has been a passion of Kate's since she first picked up her jewellery tools over 20 years ago. Hand Powder-coating base metals brings vibrant and unique colours to her pieces. She also uses a variety of gemstones in her work, both natural and synthetic to create eye catching, statement jewellery.
