"Morvoren” - derives from the Cornish mor, meaning “sea,” and moren, “maiden,” taking on the meaning of “mermaid.” The colours of the stones are referential of the ocean and my heritage that links to Cornwall. The design of the piece is based on a whimsical fairy tale. A piece that has been worn in another time through an imaginary life journey. An object that might have been excavated amongst a buried hoard of treasures under the sea.
My sense of place is deeply rooted from my ancestors in Cornwall. Their journey and their connections to their original homelands I revisit repeatedly in my work. They left for far shores to America and Australia in the 1800s. One of them wrote in his diary about leaving his family and friends in Cornwall: “Under feelings which I will never forget, I left my friends in North Petherwin, friends which were Ivy around my heart as the Ivy around the gigantic oak.” I often ask if these feelings carry through generations and if a sense of place and belonging is intergenerational as I feel completely centered and at peace by the ocean.

Georgie Brooks is a Melbourne based multi-disciplined jeweller and designer. Through her pieces, she casts a view to the past to inspire her customised designs that are crafted from recycled metals and hand- cut Australian gems. Her blended design principles explore imagined histories that reference a cross-section of ancient cultures; from the mysterious Bronze Age, to the Viking Era. She particularly pays homage to her Cornish ancestry, imagining ancient rugged coastlines and wind-swept beaches. The design of her work suggests pieces that have been worn in another time through an imaginary life journey or an object that might have been excavated amongst a buried hoard of treasures. 
By taking a view to the past to inform her designs, Georgie marks life’s milestones by transforming personal stories into wearable heirlooms. Georgie has forged connections with fossickers all over the country to find gemstones that are truly unique, often sourcing stones that cannot be found again. 
Georgie began her interest in designing jewellery when she was working as an Exhibitions Designer in London. Georgie’s blended design principles stem from her degree in History, a Degree in Interior Design and an Advanced Diploma in Engineering (Jewellery).
