These two pieces are the start of a collection that celebrates the blurred yet distinct memories of 'home', specifically of the 'void deck'. Growing up in Singapore, the 'void deck' was an integral part of everyday life for me. It was meant to be a space for the community - for recreation, weddings, wakes and other social events. In 'Void Deck 1', the little structures on the ring are reminiscent of the stools and table at the void deck that my grandma would sit at while watching the world go by, a memory of youth and family in what seems like a distant place now. In 'Void Deck 2', the jagged layered frames symbolise the memory of learning how to cycle at the void deck as a child, wobbling past the pillars and ceiling frames that hold the building up. I used sand casting and keum-boo techniques to create these one-off pieces, with the hope of sharing a bit of the nostalgia for that unique urban landscape and yearning for community cohesion.

Yeli is a Naarm-based artist and jewellery maker who grew up in Singapore. Her practice, Maker Chuan, draws inspiration from landforms, urban structures, nature and memories. Her work references the natural weathering of landforms by highlighting organic textures and marks on her jewellery pieces, often in contrast to geometric shapes, an ode to the urban environment she grew up in. Yeli works primarily with silver and brass, using silversmithing and sand casting methods. She hopes to share her love for metals, art and nature by making wearable art pieces in the form of jewellery.
