Julie Smeros is a Brisbane-based artist working from her studio at Vacant Assembly in West End. Raised in Sydney and a graduate of Sydney College of the Arts, she has spent seven years living and working in Japan and four years in the Middle East, experiences that continue to shape her practice. Working primarily in ceramics, Smeros explores narratives drawn from Greek mythology. Her pieces are recognisable through her use of materials: porcelain and cobalt blue, to create distinctive imagery across the surface of her forms. Blurring the line between functional vessel and sculptural object, her work combines practical forms with illustrative decoration. Through her practice, Smeros investigates storytelling, materiality, and form, inviting viewers to connect mythological tales to their daily lives.
