Romy Mittlemann

Romy Mittelman is a Melbourne-based jeweller who began her practice in Rome, Italy. She returned to her home in Melbourne where she studied gold and silversmithing at the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT, now Melbourne Polytechnic) and RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology).

The ancient practice of lost wax casting is very much alive in Mittelman's work. She loves experimenting with the wax's texture and malleability before it is cast into silver or gold.

Romy has explored spiritual and religious iconography in her latest range, which deifies the modern woman, elevating the multi-talented and multi-tasking everyday heroines of contemporary society to the realm of the immortals.

Ancient jewellery techniques, styles and talismans are central themes in Romy's work. She has also incorporated unlikely found objects in her jewellery, giving new life and value to once discarded items.
